A cleaning checklist every business owner needs for the festive season
Most of us are well and truly back into the swing of life, working again in offices and enjoying catching up in person with our colleagues, friends and family.
And now it’s almost Christmas! How quickly has that come around?
It’s that exciting time of year when most companies close for a couple of weeks, allowing us to stop working and enjoy a well-deserved break. And geez – we all need a break this year! Many of us have struggled through working from home and need to get away now we can.
If you’re in charge of an office, now is the time to start preparing for the summer break. Whether you’re fully closed or running skeleton staff, there are a few things you need to consider for pre chirstmas cleaning.
Start with a spring clean of your office
Yes, we know you may have thoroughly cleaned your office just before your staff returned, but did you do all the extra little bits? A thorough spring clean means you’ll come back into your office in the New Year and start the year fresh.
Here are some extra things you can do to spring clean your office:
- Clean out your storage room – put things back in their place and throw away whatever isn’t needed
- Clean fridges – ask your staff to throw out anything they don’t need and check expiry dates
- Check your stationery cupboard – order stock that’s needed
- Get your windows cleaned to allow more natural light in when the office lights won’t be on
- Ask your staff to file away their paperwork (if any) and make sure they don’t have any food left in their desk drawers that will go off over the holiday period
Once you’ve got desks cleared, book in an office cleaning company to give your premises a thorough clean.
While your office is closed, schedule any maintenance or extra office cleaning
While everyone is out of the office (or you’ve only got a few staff in handling the phones and so on), it’s the best time to do some office maintenance.
Here are some things you may want to consider:
- Freshening up the look of your office with new paint
- Replacing old, worn-out carpets OR steam cleaning your carpets to refresh them
- Getting your air conditioning serviced and ensuring the filters are clean and fresh
- Scheduling any repair work that you need (broken locks, windows not opening correctly, desks or chairs broken, electrical faults and so on)
- Have your cleaning company do a thorough clean – wiping down all desks, cleaning the fridge (which hopefully is empty!), cleaning walls, doors, toilets, windows, vacuuming and mopping
- Make sure the bins are emptied on the last day of work (or ask your cleaning company to add this to their list if they’re coming in after you’ve left)
Your last day in the office before your Christmas break
Honestly, on the last day of work, you’ll all be so excited that you’re not going to be thinking about cleaning! You may even have a few Christmas nibbles and drinks before you leave.
That’s why it’s a great idea to get an office cleaning company to come in and clean up after you and your staff have left. They can make sure your bins are emptied, food is thrown out, and desks are cleaned.
You should also make sure that:
- Everyone has powered off their computers to save energy
- You’ve got out of office messages on your emails or your phone (or use a phone answering service)
- All unnecessary equipment is turned off at the wall (e.g. toasters, kettles etc.) to save electricity
- Plants are given to someone to care for, or you’ve arranged for someone to water them if needed
- Lights are switched off
- Any important or valuable items are either taken home or locked in safes
- You’ve rescheduled or cancelled any deliveries that may come over this closure
